Westbrook attributes his time living in Oklahoma and the lack of storytelling on the event as his inspiration for producing the series. It's important we uncover the buried stories of African Americans in this country. We must amplify them now more than ever if we want to create change moving forward, Westbrook said.
Reverend Al Sharpton
Civil Rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton presented passionate eulogies at George Floyds Memorial Service in Minneapolis and at his funeral in Houston. During the memorial, Sharpton coined the phrase, get off of our necks, which would turn into a popular chant among protesters in the Black Lives Matter movement. Sharpton also took time to recognize families who also lost someone to racial injustice, encouraged those joining the protests, and called for justice for Floyds death.
Michael "Killer Mike" Santiago Render
Rapper, activist, and the son of an Atlanta police officer Killer Mike gave a powerful speech to encourage perseverance for a change in the system, while remaining diligent and peaceful. Killer Mike expressed his respect for the police and his desire that others do not destroy themselves in their anger over Floyds death, but expressed an even deeper need for a reset in government practices. It is time to hold mayoral offices accountable, chiefs and deputy chiefs, he stated, it is your duty not to burn your own house down for anger with an enemy, it is your duty to fortify your own house so that you may be a house of refuge in times of organization.
DeRay Mckesson
An activist and former school administrator, DeRay McKesson is the creator of the 8 Cant Wait list, a set of proposals that should be enforced in law enforcement to prevent police brutality. The eight proposals have since gone viral on social media through reposting and retweeting. Mckesson also works in educating and discussing racial issues to the public.
Ludacris
Rapper Ludacris is working alongside co- founder Sandy Lal to create KidNation, a program to educate kids in smart, but cool ways. Though the organization is not officially set for release until later this year, Ludacris has already released a song titled Get Along as KidNation's first project. The song and the accompanying video were built to teach children about racism during the Black Lives Matter Movement. Get Along spreads a message of love and acceptance of other people that the rapper hopes will encourage equality among the next generation.
Kendrick Sampson
Actor and longtime activist Kendrick Sampson is no stranger to the Black Lives Matter protests. Sampson protested for several days straight, despite being injured through non- lethal means. Sampson is also the cofounder BLD PWR (build power), an organization that encourages those with large platforms to use them for social change, and is starring in the movie Miss Juneteenth .
