hether you are getting certifications, boning up on needed skills or going back to school for the next degree, you have a lot to study and learn. Below is a strategy called the EL3G Methodology, created by Team Mindshift, LLC., that can help you learn what you need to in an easier, more efficient way.
Take Control of Emotion and Self Talk (E)
Here is a bold statement: you decide how you feel and the conversations that you have with yourself. As a math professor for over 10 years, invariably each semester I would have the fol- lowing dialogue with one or more students: Student : I am not very good at math. Me : OK, first why tell me that, but more importantly, that is not true. What is 1 + 1? Student : 2, that is easy math. Me : Well, at some point that was a hard con- cept for you. So, it's not about easy or hard, but about changing concepts from unknown to known and that is what education is all about. Instead of saying, 'I am not very good at math,' start saying, 'I am getting better at math.' Each is true but one statement empowers you more

than the other and puts you in charge of your own learning.
Learning to Learn How to Learn (L3)
Learning concepts and then being able to fill in the skills is a far more efficient way to learn. For example, cloud computing is taking what you are able to do on a laptop or desktop com- puter and putting that capability on the internet, where you can access the same features through a browser. Note that the way I describe cloud comput- ing lets you know more about cloud comput- ing companies without knowing the details. You now know that AWS, Azure and Google Cloud all have the ability to create a computer- type machine via a browser. You also have an idea of the things you can do with it. All of this you understand without actually knowing the details. Additionally, I could tell you that a company that you have never heard of is a cloud computing company and you'd already know a lot about it based on the above. That's why knowing the context is important.
Generalize what you have learned (G)
Now that you have the above tools, gener- alize their use to other domains, situations or learnings. One technique that's often used in mathematics is to divide and conquer problems. This consists of breaking the problem down into smaller sub-problems, and then trying to solve those. You then continue breaking each problem down until you get to a set of problems you can solve. Then you set about solving those sub-problems and combine the solutions until you solve the final overarching problem. This is a technique that can easily be used to solve business problems, life challenges or any other problems that you face. Remember EL3G (Emotion and Self Talk, Learning to Learn How to Learn, and Generalization) and use the above steps to approach learning new material. Not only will it make learning easier and more productive, but you will feel better prepared to take on that new certification, new job or another new chal- lenge.
