US Embassies to Fly Pride Flags
Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has offi- cially authorized permission for U.S. embassies to fly the Pride flag outside of their buildings as part of the International Day of Homophobia and Pride Month. The presence of pride flags at these embassies, as described by a State Department spokesperson to Insider, are to advocate for awareness for human rights and against discrimination of all people, including the LGBTQ+ community.

New York Recognizes LGBTQ Businesses as Minority-Owned
New York City announced that it will begin to recognize LGBTQ+ owned businesses as Minority-Owned businesses, making them eli- gible to take part in the funds and resources pro- vided to these businesses by the city. LGBTQ+ owned businesses will now have access to con- sulting, mentorship, educational programs and a piece of the large sum of money that comes from city contracts each year. Though New York City is not the first city to implement this notion, it is the largest city to do so thus far. Other cities that have similar programs include Los Angeles, Nashville, Chicago, Philadelphia and Baltimore.

The Restoration of Healthcare Protections
In late May of this year, President Joe Biden passed federal protections for the LGBTQ+ community against healthcare discrimina- tion, namely for transgender individuals. The amendment was added onto a rule in Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act that lists spe- cific and explicit protections from discrimina- tion based on sexual preference and gender identity when it comes to receiving healthcare in federally funded spaces.

Kamala Harris is the First Vice President to March at Pride
On June 12, Vice President Kamala Har- ris made history by becoming the first Vice President to ever march in a pride parade. Accompanied by her husband and second gentleman, Doug Emhoff, Harris joined Wash- ington D.C. in their Capitol Pride event. She delivered some brief remarks in favor of the Equality Act and in support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Yelp LGBTQ Businesses
The popular business advisor, Yelp, has implemented a new system that makes it eas- ier for individuals to find LGBTQ+ owned and LGBTQ+ safe businesses. Businesses on Yelp are now able to add an attribute to their page where they can officially identify as a LGBTQ-owned or Open to All business. Currently, more than 581,000 businesses have demonstrated that they are Open to All, pledging to make their business a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community.

The Lavender Book App Launches for Black LGBTQ+ Individuals
The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), an organization dedicated to serving the Black LGBTQ+ community has come out with their newest product, the Lavender Book, an app used to list safe and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ people of color. Searchers can not only find businesses that are inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community, but are also able to find spaces with gender neutral bathrooms and that are owned by Black or LGBTQ+ leaders. This app specifically is designed to help individuals traveling to new places and to promote safety to the community.
