Solange Knowles:
First Black Woman to Compose for the NYC Ballet
Singer, songwriter and sister of Beyonc, Solange Knowles has made history by becoming the first Black woman to compose the score for the renowned New York City Ballet. Her curated compositions were specifically used for the 10th anniversary of the Fall Fashion Gala, which honored the ballet's vice chair, Sarah Jessica Parker, and will continue performances through May 2023. The music she created was performed by the City Ballet Orchestra alongside Knowles' own creative partners and ensemble. Though Knowles has not stated much on her accomplishment, Beyonc did take to Instagram to congratulate her sister by saying: You are a visionary and one of one. Congratulations on being the first African American woman to compose for the New York City Ballet. The piece you composed is phenomenal. I love you deep.
