Meet the First Black Woman Chief of Patrol for the NYPD
Juanita Holmes made history in late November 2020 when she was appointed as the Chief of Patrol for the New York Police Department, the largest police force in the United States. This title makes Holmes the irst woman to ever hold the position and the highest-ranking African-American woman in the NYPDs history. Holmes has served on the force since 1987, having previously held sergeant, lieutenant, captain, deputy inspector, deputy chief, and assistant chief positions. In every position she has held, Holmes has campaigned for equality and transparency, a platform she promises to keep as Chief of Patrol.
